In my last newsletter (December 2018) I spoke about the busy end to the year – well, the new year has started off even busier. We have a great deal of new business to talk about.

We have started seven new school grounds maintenance contracts since the beginning of the year – three full-service contracts and four mobile maintenance contracts. We have full time staff at Alfriston College, Kingsway School and Hamilton Boys High School. We are performing mobile services of mowing, line marking, gardening and sports field renovations at the following four schools: Mangere College, Botany Downs Secondary College, St Pauls College and Glendowie College.

We have also picked up many more school sports field renovation services, and are currently assisting Eden Park with their field renovations.

Our construction/renovation team have installed a primary sports field drainage system at Greenbay Primary, and completed a very successful drainage/sand carpet installation at the Remuera Golf Club. Their current project to complete draining a sports field for Waimauku Primary School will be completed in the next week. This will be followed by a very busy late summer/autumn of renovations. This will typically include coring, harvesting, top-dressing, seeding, scarifying, spraying, fertilising and verti-draining.

Our company has firmly set sail on our new direction of becoming the leading provider of grounds maintenance services to schools, and thanks to our staff and customer support we are showing signs of significant success. I am confident we will have more schools on board when I put pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard) in the 2nd quarter of 2019.

Regards

Rob

December 2018 Turftech News

Welcome to the first Turftech news in a long time. We have over the last year embarked on a challenging change in direction. We decided that the company’s future lay in the school market and not in golf course maintenance. It has been a tough year but we are now beginning to make positive strides in our quest to become a leading supplier of grounds maintenance to the school market. In October we signed a long-term agreement with Avondale College. We have 2 full-time employees stationed at the school. Adam who joined us from Kings College is Head Groundsman, and Jason is his assistant. Jason was previously self-employed. We look forward to them stamping the Turftech mark on the Avondale College grounds.

In November we signed a long-term agreement with KingsWay School in Silverdale to maintain all of their green space areas. We commence this contract in mid-January 2019.

In December we signed agreements with Mangere College and Botany Downs Secondary College. These contracts will be part of our new mobile services offering, which includes mowing, line-marking, and renovations.

Having just purchased the world-class SMG Sports Champ, we are now in a position to offer a full artificial turf maintenance service.

We have recently completed the installation of lateral drains into the Number 1 rugby field at Hamilton Boys High School. We have a busy construction season with projects at Waitemata Golf Club, Whitford Golf Club, Green Bay Primary School, Waimauku School, Remuera Golf Club and North Shore Aero Club. We are all looking forward to the end of the year and a well-earned break, ready to tackle the new year refreshed and excited about our new prospects.

Rob.

Turftech has taken delivery of our new Vredo overseeder. Unlike most other seeders, this implement is capable of dispensing fine grass seed (eg. bent grass or C4) at a precise quantity (>3gr/m2 ) and depth (3/4mm) . We are looking forward to making good use of this in the upcoming season.

Overseeding is only successful if the seed is sown directly into the soil. The Vredo overseeder is equipped with a Dual-Disc System. The pairs of independently sprung discs, set at 35mm apart, guide seed into a V-shaped slit in the turf, whatever the soil conditions – clay, peat, loam or sand – wet or dry. These discs are extremely durable and thin and sharp – not to be confused with cheaper thicker discs which rip into the grass instead of slicing. The roller then closes the slit and ensures good contact between seed and soil. Water and nutrients have thereby easy access to the seed, encouraging strong root formation and fast germination.
Research in Germany confirms that the Vredo system generates a germination rate of 96%. This extremely high strike rate is possible because the seeding depth can be adjusted precisely from 0-20 mm.

The sharp discs, with a diameter of 250 mm, provide surface aeration and the roller ensures that the seeded surface is left smooth fast and true. An innovative hydraulic system enables easy adjustment of the sowing depth of the machine from 0-20mm. Even with extreme undulations the machine retains the correct sowing depth.

Months of hard work by a fantastic team at Remuera Golf Club culminated this weekend in an extremely successful NZPGA. Turftech’s team at Remuera have been working alongside the Remuera course superintendent Spencer Cooper over the last few months preparing the course for this tournament. Their hard work culminated in a wonderful 4 days of golf, and the resoundingly positive comments from the golfers on the magnificent presentation of the course were well deserved. They were enthusiastically supported by the Dad’s Army, which is always very active at Remuera, and countless volunteers, and of course the Remuera members who gave their course over to the professionals for the tournament. Well done to everyone – your long hours and hard work are appreciated.

After 5 happy years at our admin offices in Mt Wellington, we have taken the plunge and have moved to new premises in Otahuhu. We have known for a number of years that housing our admin and equipment under one roof would be an ideal situation. We hope we have found the right location to do this, and are excited about having a central “depot” we can call home.

December saw our transporters (and staff) working overtime moving all our construction equipment and workshop from Formosa to Otahuhu – a huge undertaking at relatively short notice. We moved the admin office during January, which was thankfully a much simpler task.

All that now remains to complete the move is a “Welcome to the new Turftech premises” party! Watch this space ……
